THE REAL KILLER BEES

Killer bees (officially called Africanized honeybees) originated in Brazil in 1956 as an experiment to mate the African honeybee with local bees. The breeders __________ (1) hoping to get a bee that would produce more honey in the tropics. Instead, __________ (2) produced aggressive bees that have been known __________ (3) attack people and animals. Each year, the bees move about 350 miles (563 kilometers) north; in 1990, they came __________ (4) the U.S. border and into Hidalgo, Texas.

The popular name "killer bee" has not __________ (5) benificial to the insects. In fact, there are many myths __________ (6) these bees. For eaxample, they do not fly faster __________ (7) other domestic (usually European) honeybees (they all average between 12 and 15 miles, or 19 and 24 kilometers, per hour), their sting has __________ (8) venom than that of a domestic honeybee, and they are smaller than domestic honeybees.

Killer bees do have some features __________ (9) make them an insect to watch. When a bee's body __________ (10) crushed, from a swat, for example, it releases an odor that incites other bees to attack. Although these bees do not seek __________ (11) victims, they will protect their hive vigorously (about 10 times as many African bees as European bees will sting when the colonies are equally disturbed). However, scientists also believe that the killer bees' aggressiveness __________ (12) eventually diminish as they interbreed with the more placid European bees to the north.
